Sapeurs: New Guiness Advert for 2014

Screen Shot 2014-01-15 at 17.17.21

For their 2014 campaign Guinness have decided to capitalize on the ostentatious style of a society of men known as the Sapeurs, who reside in Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo.

I first noticed these guys a few years back when browsing through my local photography book shop and this striking cover of an African man in a pink suit jumped out at me.

gentleman of bacongo

“Gentlemen of Bacongo” is a striking series of images documenting the phenomenon which has subsequently inspired Paul Smith’s Runway shows.

As a companion to the advert Guinness have produced a documentary which goes into slightly more detail illustrating how for the Sapeurs this is as much about the lifestyle and camaraderie as it is about escapism through style.

The Sapeurs otherwise know as the gentlemen of the Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance, live by a moral code which involves sharing, pacifism and love.

For more info about the Sapeurs and possible indoctrination by Guinness head here.

Hunter – Everyday Pioneers

Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 09.32.51

Fashion films are a relatively new phenomenon which has popped up in recent years, with fashion photographers exercising their latent desires to be film makers and taking advantage of the widespread availability of HD filming equipment.

Hunter are no stranger to pioneering new mediums, apparently they’ve been making rubber boots as far back as 1856. And have released ‘Everyday Pioneers’ to showcase their Autumn / Winter 2013 collection. Set against the dramatic landscape of Glencoe, Scotland, the film stars actors James Cosmo (whom you mat have seen waving a sword around in Game of Thrones and Braveheart), Steven Cree ( from Brave, Macbeth and The Knot) and just for fun the directors have cast Jenna Roberts (Select Model Management) as a maiden in who appears in red boots and batty riders towards the end.

Check out the film below if you like fashion films and boots.

Red Stripe Stubby Bottles

IMG_8507

Last week the generous folks over at Red Stripe HQ sent us a 24 pack of Red Stripe, one for each hour of the day.

IMG_8464

To show our appreciation we spent some time taking these pictures. There’s something seductive about the translucency of these small brown bottles, which makes one think about lazy afternoons in Jamaica.

IMG_8458

Unfortunately like the delicious Giant Tortoises of Madagascar none of the bottles survived with the beer still inside. Thank you Red Stripe!

Bacardi Beginnings: Toddla T and Roses Gabor

Toddla T and Roses Gabor for Bacardi Beginnings, West London 9/7/13 by Tom Oldham

Following the exciting BACARDÍ Beginnings 24-hour A&R collaboration between Rudimental and Bipolar Sunshine, renowned DJ and producer Toddla T and his chosen emerging artist, Roses Gabor, will continue to push the boundaries of music releases with the mentoring programme’s second creative project titled ‘Beats Per Minute’.

On 4 September at 7pm, these two artists will release their new track ‘Pandora’s Box (BACARDÍ Beginnings)’ together using the power of social media. In a creative twist to standard single releases, only the first beat of the track will be released online – with each ‘tweet’ on Twitter and Facebook ‘like’ the track receives, more of the track will become available to listen to, until it is entirely released.

Once the track is fully unlocked, a remix competition will begin for budding producers. The stems (individual parts of the track) will become available for people to reinterpret. The winner of the remix competition will be chosen by Toddla T and Roses Gabor. The winner’s prize will include a production masterclass in the studio with Toddla T, remix software and, finally, the winning track will be played at the next BACARDÍ Beginnings event.

Fans can unlock, listen to, and remix the track at www.BacardiBeginnings.com.

Adidas Socks and Slides

B-socksnslides---refined-1

To celebrate the growing trend in socks and slides (the wearing of poolside flip flops with socks as illustrated in the picture), Adidas threw a rooftop soiree at the Boundary in the heart of London’s Shoreditch on one of the summer’s warmest evenings. Guests were invited to wear a pair of Adidas branded socks and slides, as well indulge in cocktails and grilled foods.

Despite some initial concerns about looking like someone’s Dad it was actually a lot of fun. The combination made for a comfortable fit and the chilled atmosphere helped tremendously. Definitely a look for hanging out at home, and who knows maybe I’ll be tempted to wear these down to the shop on my morning milk run.
