Between 2011 and and Jan 2013, Chicago has racked up a death toll higher than that of American Soldiers that had died during the Afghan war which started in 2001, therefore the city being dubbed Chi Raq. In the recent times we have seen representers of the South Side Drill scene such as Chief Keef, Lil Durk and Lil Reece arise. World Star Hip Hop has investigated the roots and origination of this scene in it’s documentary released at the beginning of the month.
Points are raised about a dark environment forced upon by local government and gentrification, young children growing up in a world of violence, and well… For any of you in the UK, imagine Grime back in 2001, the East London area between Dalston and Newham before Tesco Metro’s and Sainsbury’s Locals popped up… but with no playgrounds, grass, and half broken down buildings and a lot of bullet holes [I my self have never been to Chicago but it all seems very dark].
