The limited edition Stomper Skytop upper is constructed of black waxed suede that is complemented by black waxed laces, black visa terry lining, and a black sole. Admittedly the floor is his wardrobe sometimes – life’s too short to hang everything up – but then his clothes were built to last: he likes the way they age, and spends more and shops less. He likes to make out that he doesn’t think about clothes much, but of course he does. He likes it when the fit is on loose side: he finds a comfortable reassurance in the slight excess of fabric.
He’s a late riser, a freelance illustrator, and never leaves home without his laptop and graphics tablet. Theoretically the world is his hotdesk, but he usually ends up in this tiny nameless backstreet café round the corner that does great coffee, a short cycle-ride away. His change jangles loosely in his pocket. Occasionally he’ll drop off the radar for a week or two, but those who know him well know better than to worry – out of the blue they’ll get a call from him from the other side of the world: a job came up, or he met some girl. Every time he heads out, he never knows when he’ll be back or where his journey will take him: he measures his success by the randomness of his life, as this is all he ever wanted.
Ask him what he does and you won’t always get the same answer. When he’s on the decks he’ll tell you he’s a hair stylist; when he’s at the salon he’ll say he’s a DJ. And occasionally he’ll opt for some other answer entirely. His chat is all charm but he’s fast-talking, and sometimes it’s like he’s never in the room long enough to be fully present.
On the rare occasions he’s home it’s only ever to sleep. His car sits in the underground car park most of the time, as his Vespa is much quicker for getting around the city. He says he likes to travel light. Stripping life to its essentials is an art, and it is something he has mastered: excess weight just slows him down. Yet he always carries three mobiles. No one is sure why, and no one has more than two of his numbers.
He says he picks his clothes for their functionality, although there’s always a little more flourish in what he wears than he can really justify. Nostalgia doesn’t interest him: he is always focused on the horizon between today and tomorrow. His favourite flight is LA to Sydney – heading West across the International Date Line, he feels like he’s accelerating into the future.
