Photography : Riots By Tyler Shields
Photographer Tyler Shields is getting political after the pepper-spraying incident. He uses blonde models to spray London riot police in the face, as a crew of ravenous paparazzi shoot the action from the side. The images play on the role of power and its perception, giving the models, culturally sculpted to appear vulnerable, objectified and in control of the action. While this may be an unexpectedly politically-charged and topical concept for Shields, it is more than just a one-off joke. The images echo the struggles of the little guy, be it the nationwide debate on bullying in schools or the Occupy movement. “This was just about as crazy as it looks and yes, we used real pepper spray which is no joke. Trust me, you do not want to be sprayed in the face!” As Tyler Shields explained, Check out the full entry after the Jump

When he signs letters and contracts, his oversized capitals tower over the rest of his signature. Some find his abruptness a bit much; others find his frankness refreshing. His routine is what makes him so productive, and he’d be lost without his assistant, although he’d never admit it. Structure is meaning: he has no time for woolly thinking, meetings with no agenda, and pointless chat.
He respects tradition. He likes jackets that showcase proper tailoring but hates looking retro; He thinks the project of modernism is far from over. Home is sparsely furnished and spotless, his shiny white desk as uncluttered as the one at the office, identically laid out with screen, keypad, filing tray, HB pencil and leather-bound notebook arranged in a strict grid; the technology in both locations is regularly updated. He has never lost his keys, ever, and he’s not sure why he’s so proud of the fact. He loves cars – although he has never owned anything made after 1979, and will always wear gloves at the steering wheel, in the same way a museum curator does when handling sacred texts. He loves speed and drives too fast, and feels the need to rationalise the rush it gives him by pointing out that he is never, ever late.
Admittedly the floor is his wardrobe sometimes – life’s too short to hang everything up – but then his clothes were built to last: he likes the way they age, and spends more and shops less. He likes to make out that he doesn’t think about clothes much, but of course he does. He likes it when the fit is on loose side: he finds a comfortable reassurance in the slight excess of fabric.
He’s a late riser, a freelance illustrator, and never leaves home without his laptop and graphics tablet. Theoretically the world is his hotdesk, but he usually ends up in this tiny nameless backstreet café round the corner that does great coffee, a short cycle-ride away. His change jangles loosely in his pocket. Occasionally he’ll drop off the radar for a week or two, but those who know him well know better than to worry – out of the blue they’ll get a call from him from the other side of the world: a job came up, or he met some girl. Every time he heads out, he never knows when he’ll be back or where his journey will take him: he measures his success by the randomness of his life, as this is all he ever wanted.
Ask him what he does and you won’t always get the same answer. When he’s on the decks he’ll tell you he’s a hair stylist; when he’s at the salon he’ll say he’s a DJ. And occasionally he’ll opt for some other answer entirely. His chat is all charm but he’s fast-talking, and sometimes it’s like he’s never in the room long enough to be fully present.
On the rare occasions he’s home it’s only ever to sleep. His car sits in the underground car park most of the time, as his Vespa is much quicker for getting around the city. He says he likes to travel light. Stripping life to its essentials is an art, and it is something he has mastered: excess weight just slows him down. Yet he always carries three mobiles. No one is sure why, and no one has more than two of his numbers.
He says he picks his clothes for their functionality, although there’s always a little more flourish in what he wears than he can really justify. Nostalgia doesn’t interest him: he is always focused on the horizon between today and tomorrow. His favourite flight is LA to Sydney – heading West across the International Date Line, he feels like he’s accelerating into the future.

Introducing the Freshjive Holiday 2011 collection featuring Left Brain and Hodgy Beats from Mellowhype. Influenced by the dirty rotten filthy streets of downtown’s Skid Row, the collection was photographed in the dirty rotten filthy alley behind the Freshjive factory. The Mellowhype boys reign in full effect, along with a cast of background characters (a wheelchair handicapped homeless man, his girl, and streetwalker Nene) ending with a bad bad bitch gettin’ bagged and sagged (and maybe even shagged) right on out of frame. The photoshoot was carefully planned out in order to combine photographs to create one long Panoramic image (see the Freshjive tumblr for behind the scenes images, along with the preview video) and can be seen on our holiday collections page (detailed images of the styles can be seen here). The Items include a wool bomber, winterknit sweaters, sweaterknit pants, heavyweight chino pants, custom knitted sweatshirts, fleece blazers, and a handful of T-shirts.
