Rumfest 2012 Recap

Last week Rumfest hit the Excel centre in east london, and responsible adults that we are we thought what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to ‘Sample’ fine rums from around the world. I mean what could go wrong?

Here’s what went down:

12pm: Rumfest opens to the public….

2pm: We arrive… it is a Sunday our day of rest after all.

2:20pm We’ve been inside for twenty minutes and it’s like a party in full swing, we’re already getting that warm on the inside feeling that neat Rum and crackers provide, and people are dancing to the sound of Soca music.

3pm: We decide that maybe it’s a good idea to grab lunch, noticing that some of the people around us are falling asleep in their chairs as we eat.

3:30pm “Thank God for that pie and mash!” We head back in…

4pm: “How much for a bottle of 8 year old Ron Fortuna Nigaraguaguann please?”

4:30pm: Half an hour left… “Quick let’s see if anyone’s giving out free samples!”

5pm: “Whadya mean it’s finished?”

And there you have it, thank you Rumfest, it truly was a carnival for people in denial of winter. Next year we’re going for both days!

Puma Yard closing party recap: Norman Jay/Good Times and David Rodigan

We’ve just about recovered from the final day of Puma Yard, which featured Norman Jay’s Good Times carnival sound system as well as the legendary David Rodigan. This was definitely one of the highlights of a staggering two weeks of events.

When we arrived David Rodigan was in full swing hyping up the crowd and then Norman Jay appeared in his customary hat. Somehow in the space of a day they’d managed to install a replica of a caravan on the stage which housed the DJ booth where Norman Jay and David Rodigan pumped out their carnival sounds. One wonders: Will Puma be hosting a carnival party?

Nike Fuel Fest Recap

Sunday night saw Nike launching it’s first ever “Fuel Fest” and not being people who like to miss a huge free party we thought we’d check it out. Before the night began we were given a Nike Fuel Band, which measures your activity in terms of steps take and calories burned, and then assigns a value known as Nike Fuel.

The event took place at the iconic Battersea power-station in South London. Tinie Tempah, Zane Lowe and Magnetic Man were there to provide the entertainment… as they staged a dance off between the girls and boys. All the fuelbands were wirelessly connected to a computer which then calculated how many points each side had accumulated.

In the end the girls won dammit!

But despite the male race being humiliatingly defeated it was still a night to remember, the visuals alone were mind boggling…. check out our lovely gallery below:

World Basketball Festival Brixton Recap

Last Saturday we went down to Brixton to check out the World Basketball Festival at Windrush Square in Brixton. It was a day of 90 second knockouts, music, chicken and slam dunks which culminated with a 5 on 5 game between Team Nike from New York and a GB Allstar team. Basketball heroes Luol Deng and Scottie Pippen were on hand, and later on in the evening international dunker Guy Dupuy aka ‘Easy Jumper’ appeared on stage at the academy to compete against the winners of the 90 second knockout..

After the days events the action moved to the Brixton academy where there was an evening of entertainment headlined by Big Boi of Outkast. Miami Heat band made regular appearances and there was even a dance off involving members of the audience. What a day!

Wireless festival: Vodafone VIP Barclaycard festival App

So Wireless is finally here, and those of you with tickets are likely to be asking yourself a lot of questions. Where are the stages? Which act is on when? Where can I buy a beverage? What is the meaning of life? What is the evolutionary purpose of having earlobes?

Well thankfully the folks down at Vodafone have created a free App to help you answer at least some of these questions and to navigate your way through the weekend. The official app gives you the full line-up, personalised schedules, maps and social networking tools

One of the useful features we noticed is the “My Schedule” feature which allows you to create a personalised schedule of performances. Very handy indeed.

This App is also part of Vodafone VIP, which gives the lucky buggers who are on Vodafone exclusive access to phone charging points, viewing platforms and backstage tours. Find out how to get involved here.
